Prioritizing Yourself and Finding Support
Hi there, Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!
Yesterday, we discussed the profound and often unheralded emotional journey of becoming a spousal caregiver. Today, in our final part, we’ll share crucial strategies for prioritizing your own well-being and finding the support you need to continue your loving care, and truly live through your Canadian Senior Moments with resilience.

Prioritizing Yourself: Self-Care is Not Selfish
This is crucial. You cannot pour from an empty cup, and maintaining your own well-being is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for both your health and your continued ability to provide care.
-
Acknowledge Your Role: Recognize that you are a caregiver. This isn’t just “what spouses do”; it’s a distinct, demanding role that deserves recognition and active support.
-
Prioritize Your Health: Schedule and keep your own doctor’s appointments. Ensure you’re eating nutritious meals, getting as much rest as possible, and trying to incorporate some physical activity, even if it’s just a short walk around the block.
-
Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to additional responsibilities if you’re already stretched thin. It’s okay to prioritize your caregiving duties and your own rest.
-
Seek Respite Care: Even a few hours or a day away from your caregiving duties can make a world of difference in recharging your batteries. This isn’t a sign of failure, but a smart strategy for sustainability.
-
Stay Connected: Don’t let caregiving completely isolate you. Make an effort to maintain friendships, even if it’s through phone calls, brief visits, or online connections.
-
Communicate Openly: Talk to your partner (as much as possible), your adult children, and trusted friends about your feelings, frustrations, and challenges. Sharing the burden can lighten it.
-
Find Joy: Continue to pursue hobbies or interests that bring you happiness, even if they need to be adapted to your current situation. Listen to music, read a book, watch a favourite show—allow yourself moments of pleasure.
