Finding Your Community
Hi there. Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!
In the first two parts of our series, we talked about the benefits of hobbies for a sharp mind and a healthy body, and we explored the power of creative expression. Today, in Part 3, we’re going to discuss how a hobby can also be your gateway to a new community. Connecting with others who share your passions is a fantastic way to combat loneliness, build new friendships, and find a deeper sense of belonging.

The Power of Community
Hobbies are a powerful tool for social connection. When you join a group or a club, you are instantly surrounded by people who have a shared interest. This makes it easy to start a conversation, share your knowledge, and find camaraderie with people from all walks of life.
-
Support and Motivation: A group can provide encouragement and motivation, especially when you’re just starting a new hobby or rediscovering an old one.
-
Shared Learning: You can learn new techniques and skills from others in the group, and you can also share your own expertise, which is a great way to boost your self-esteem.
-
Regular Engagement: A regular meeting time gives you something to look forward to, creating a new routine that fills your week with purpose and social activity.

Where to Find Your Community
You don’t have to look far to find people who share your interests. There are many local and national organizations that can help you find a group that’s the perfect fit for you.
-
Seniors’ and Community Centres: These are fantastic resources that offer a wide variety of clubs and activities, from bridge clubs and knitting circles to walking groups and choir practice.
-
Libraries: Your local library is more than just a place for books. Many libraries host book clubs, writing workshops, and other community events.
-
Special Interest Groups: A quick search online for your hobby and your city (e.g., “Ottawa birdwatching club” or “Nova Scotia gardening group”) can lead you to a wealth of local groups.
