The Joy of the Indoor Hobby: Finding Focus in the Quiet

There is a specific kind of silence that only January brings to Canada. The holiday rush has faded, the decorations are tucked away, and the world outside often feels like it’s holding its breath under a blanket of white. For many of us, this is the season where the “indoor hobby” moves from a pastime to a lifeline.

Whether it is the rhythmic click of knitting needles, the steady hand required for a model ship, or the satisfying “snap” of a difficult jigsaw puzzle piece finding its home, these activities do more than just kill time. They provide a sense of order and accomplishment when the weather feels chaotic.

Marilyn and I have often found that these quiet moments of focus are when the best conversations happen. There is something about working with your hands that frees the mind to wander through old memories and new ideas. If you’ve been feeling a bit of the “winter blues,” we highly encourage you to dust off that project you started last year or pick up a brand-new skill. There is a unique joy in being a beginner again.

I, of course, spend a lot of time on the computer, tinkering with this newsletter and our website. My woodworking shop awaits in the basement, for whenever I get the urge to create in a more physical way. Marilyn continues to dominate in her Super City game online, and just the other day we picked up some craft supplies to fit in with Marilyn’s plans for Christmas ornaments for next year. Why wait for spring? Do it now!

We would love to see what you are working on during these cold winter afternoons!

Our Gathering Place is the perfect spot to “show and tell” your latest creations with the community. It’s our digital workshop where we can encourage one another, swap tips, and celebrate the small victories of a project well done. It’s a little bit like FaceBook without the trolls.

Click here to visit the Gathering Place and share a photo or a story about your current hobby!

Warmly,
