Howdy folks!
There is a distinct smell to a Canadian spring, isn’t there? It’s a mix of damp earth, salt air (at least here in the Maritimes), and—if you’re near one of our great historic sites—the faint scent of woodsmoke and old stone.
Marilyn and I were talking about how lucky we are to have had the opportunity to visit Fortress of Louisbourg a few years ago following a trip around the Cabot Trail. For those of us living here in Nova Scotia, it’s the ultimate “destination experience”, the kind of place where you can spend a whole day and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface of the history held within those walls.
Right now, they are in their “low season,” but come May 18, the gates swing open for the full 2026 season. Whether you’re a local looking for a weekend staycation or you’re one of the many folks planning a journey to Atlantic Canada this summer, Louisbourg is a must-see. There is nothing quite like walking through those massive stone gates and feeling like you’ve stepped right back into the 1700s.
Why We Love Our Heritage Sites
Whether it’s Louisbourg here in the East, Lower Fort Garry out in Manitoba (opening May 19!), or the Cumberland Heritage Village near Ottawa, these places are a “living memory” of our country. They remind us of the grit and determination it took to build a life in this rugged land.
For many of us, a trip to a heritage museum isn’t just a day out, it’s a chance to show the grandkids that “the old days” weren’t just black-and-white photos in a book. They were full of color, hard work, and community.
