Defining “Senior” on Your Own Terms
Hi there. Welcome back to the conclusion of our series on reclaiming the title of “Senior.”
Over the last few days, we’ve talked about how seniority is a hard-won promotion and how this generation actually pioneered the technology we use every day. Today, we’re talking about the future: How do we take a word that the world tries to use as a label and turn it back into a badge of honour?
The truth is, we are the ones who give the word its meaning. If society sees “senior” as a synonym for “slowing down,” it’s only because they haven’t been paying attention to what we’re actually doing.
The Power of Redefinition When you look at the members of our Canadian Senior Moment community, you don’t see people waiting around. You see people building websites, volunteering in their towns, traveling the world, and passing on decades of skill to the next generation. We are redefining the “senior moment” as a moment of clarity, purpose, and peak experience.
Choosing Your Own Label Some people prefer “Elder,” others like “Older Adult,” and some have even embraced “Zoomer.” But there is something sturdy and traditional about “Senior.” It carries the weight of history. It says, “I have seen enough of the world to know what matters.”
By wearing the title proudly, we stop apologizing for our age. We are essentially saying that we aren’t “still” active or “still” learning—we are active and learning because we are seniors. We have the time, the perspective, and the freedom to pursue what truly brings us joy.
A Call to Action I want to encourage you to think of “Senior” as an honorific—a title like “Doctor” or “Captain.” You’ve graduated from the school of life with honours. Don’t let a marketing department or a TV commercial tell you what your life should look like at this stage.
Whether you are starting a new hobby, mastering a new piece of software, or simply enjoying the peace of a Tuesday morning, you are doing it with the wisdom of a Senior. And that, my friends, is something to be celebrated.
