Yesterday, we talked about the “noise” of the internet—that feeling of being in a crowded room where everyone is shouting. Today, let’s talk about the alternative: finding a room where people are actually talking about the things you love.
One of the great myths about getting older is that our circles naturally shrink. We retire, we move, or we simply lose touch. But the digital age offers us a unique opportunity to do the opposite—to expand our circles, not based on geography, but based on shared passions.
But how do you find those people without wading through the chaos of open social media?
The Magic of “Spaces”
Imagine a community centre with many different doors. Behind one door, a group is discussing the best way to overwinter roses in the Canadian climate. Behind another, folks are swapping recipes for a traditional Maritime chowder. In a third, there’s a lively debate about the best mystery novels of the 1970s.
This is the concept behind The Gathering Place on Canadian Senior Moment.
We realized that “general” chatter can sometimes feel shallow. You don’t always want to talk about the weather; sometimes you want to talk about trains. Or needlepoint. Or politics (civilly, of course!).
That is why we organized the new site into dedicated Spaces. These are focused corners of the community where you can dive deep into specific interests. It cuts out the clutter. If you aren’t interested in sports, you never have to see the Sports Space. If you love travel, that can be your home base.
The Lost Art of Conversation
There is a difference between a “comment” and a “conversation.” On big social platforms, comments are often performative—people trying to be funny, snarky, or loud for an audience.
We wanted to bring back the feeling of a genuine chat. The new website includes a Chat Facility that allows you to communicate directly with other like-minded members. It’s not about shouting into the void; it’s about one-on-one or small group connections.
Think of it as the digital equivalent of meeting someone for coffee. You might strike up a conversation with a member in British Columbia about their photography, or compare notes on genealogy with someone in Newfoundland. The miles disappear, and suddenly, your world feels a little bigger, a little friendlier.
Safety in Numbers
We also know that stepping into a new online group can feel daunting. “Will I fit in? Will I do it wrong?”
Because Canadian Senior Moment is a community built by seniors for seniors, the learning curve is gentle. We don’t have algorithms trying to sell you things. We don’t have bots trying to scam you. We have real people—Bill, Marilyn, and members just like you—moderating the spaces and keeping the vibe respectful.
An Invitation to Explore
If you have been feeling a little bored this winter, or if you simply miss the buzz of a good conversation, we invite you to peek inside The Gathering Place.
You don’t have to post anything right away. You can just “lurk” (that’s internet slang for listening in!) and see what folks are talking about. You might find a space that sparks a memory, or a discussion that teaches you something new.
Tomorrow, we’ll talk about what happens when you decide to go from “listening” to “creating”—and how you can turn your own memories into a legacy.
Warmly
Bill and Marilyn
Founders of Canadian Senior Moment

**Bill Gould** spent 43 years as a long-haul truck driver before trading the steering wheel for a keyboard to help fellow Canadians navigate the road of retirement. A freelance writer, published author, and editor of over 50 books, Bill co-founded *Canadian Senior Moment* with his wife, Marilyn, to provide a trusted space for seniors to find clarity, safety, and connection in the digital age. When he isn’t troubleshooting “tech gremlins” or sharing childhood memories of the Prairies, he can be found in his woodshop or working on his latest novel.
