- Example (Ontario): The Assistive Devices Program (ADP) provides financial assistance for hearing aids. You pay a portion, and the program covers the rest.
- Action Tip: Contact your specific provincial health ministry or department of seniors to ask about Assistive Devices Programs or Hearing Aid Assistance Grants in your region.
- Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC): If you are a veteran, the Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC) program offers comprehensive coverage for hearing health services and devices. If you are a veteran, this should be your first point of contact.
- Private and Former Employer Insurance: Don’t forget to check any extended health benefits you may still hold through a former employer’s pension plan or a private health insurance package. These plans often have a set allowance (e.g., $1,000 per ear) toward hearing aid costs every few years.
The Claim Process: Working with an Audiologist
To access most government and insurance funding, you must work with a qualified professional.
- Get a Prescription: You typically need a referral from your family doctor to see an audiologist.
- Get a Hearing Assessment: An audiologist is a healthcare professional trained to diagnose, manage, and treat hearing loss. They will perform a comprehensive assessment.
- The Funding Forms: Once the need is confirmed, the audiologist’s office often helps you complete the necessary government and insurance forms. They are the experts in the paperwork needed for provincial subsidies.
