SPECIAL EXTRA MONDAY EDITION: (Not Our Usual Internet Course)

An Honest Conversation

Let’s Build This Together: A Conversation About Community

Hi there folks. Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!

Today’s article is a little different. Instead of teaching you something or sharing a story, we want to have an honest conversation with you about this newsletter and what we’re building together.

Four months ago, Marilyn and I launched Canadian Senior Moment with one simple goal: to create a space where Canadian seniors can find practical information, feel less alone, and connect with others navigating this stage of life. We’ve published 125 articles so far—every single day, rain or shine—covering everything from maximizing CPP benefits to making friends after 60, from winter driving tips to heartfelt personal stories.

And here’s what we’ve learned: We love writing for you. But we could learn so much from you.

The Missing Piece

Every Tuesday through Thursday, we end our articles with something called “Our Shared Wisdom”—a question meant to spark conversation. We ask things like, “What’s your experience with this?” or “What advice would you give?”

And then… silence. Mostly.

We’ve had a handful of wonderful comments from family and close friends (thank you!), and a few likes here and there. But from the vast majority of our subscribers? Nothing. And we can’t help but wonder: Are we asking the wrong questions? Are you reading but not sure how to respond? Do you think we don’t actually want to hear from you?

Because here’s the truth: We genuinely do.

Why Your Voice Matters

This newsletter isn’t meant to be a one-way broadcast, like a newspaper landing on your doorstep. Substack—the platform we use—is designed for conversations. When you comment, like, or share your own experiences, several things happen:

  • We learn what matters to you. Your comments tell us which topics resonate, what questions you’re wrestling with, and what we should write about next.

  • Other readers benefit. Often, the best advice comes in the comments. Someone shares a tip we didn’t mention. Someone else adds their own story. Suddenly, the whole community is richer.

  • It helps others find us. Substack’s algorithm shows active newsletters to more people. When you engage, you help other Canadian seniors discover this community. (We know “algorithm” sounds technical, but think of it like word-of-mouth in digital form.)

  • It builds connections. Many of you tell us you feel isolated. But imagine if, instead of just reading alone, you could share your wisdom and read others’ experiences too. That’s what we’re hoping to create here.

How to Engage (If You’ve Been Wondering)

Maybe you’ve wanted to comment but weren’t sure how. Let me walk you through it—it’s easier than you think:

To leave a comment:

  1. At the bottom of any article, you’ll see a box that says “Leave a comment”

  2. Click in that box and type your thought, experience, or answer to our question

  3. Click “Publish” (don’t worry—you can edit or delete it later if you change your mind)

To like an article:

  1. At the top or bottom of the article, click the heart icon

  2. That’s it! It tells us you found it valuable

To share with a friend:

  1. Click the “Share” button

  2. You can email it directly or copy the link to send however you’d like

To reply to our emails: You can also simply reply to any newsletter email in your inbox. It comes directly to us, and we read every single response.

Better Questions, Better Conversations

We’re also wondering if we need to ask better questions. Instead of generic “What do you think?” prompts. Maybe we should ask more specific things, like:

  • “Have you ever had to navigate the OAS clawback? What surprised you?”

  • “What’s one thing you wish you’d known before retiring?”

  • “Tell us about a friendship you made after 60—how did you meet?”

  • “What scam almost fooled you, and what tipped you off?”

Questions like these have real answers from real experience. And your answers could genuinely help someone else who’s facing the same situation.

No Pressure, Just An Invitation

Here’s what we’re NOT saying: “You must comment or we’ll stop writing.” We’ll keep showing up regardless. This newsletter isn’t dependent on metrics or engagement numbers to survive.

But here’s what we ARE saying: We started this because we believe seniors have wisdom worth sharing. We believe connection matters. We believe your voice deserves to be heard.

If you’ve been reading silently, that’s okay. But if you’ve had thoughts, stories, or experiences you’ve kept to yourself—we’d love to hear them. Even a simple “This resonated with me” or “Here’s what I experienced” adds so much.

Our Shared Wisdom: Let’s Start Here

Here’s our question for today, and we’re genuinely curious:

Why did you subscribe to Canadian Senior Moment? What were you hoping to find here?

And a bonus question: What would make you more likely to comment or engage?

Be honest. We can take it. Your answers will help us serve you better. And who knows—maybe your comment will encourage someone else who’s been lurking quietly to join the conversation too.

Looking Ahead

We’re committed to this newsletter and to you. We’ll keep writing, keep researching, keep sharing. But we’d love for this to become more than just Bill and Marilyn talking at you. We’d love for it to become a real community where Canadian seniors share wisdom, support each other, and build something meaningful together.

You in?
