Smart Tech Made Simple
Hi there. Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!
Yesterday, in Part 1 of our series, we talked about making simple, physical changes to your home for safety. Today, we’re going to dive into the world of smart technology, which, while it sounds complex, is actually designed to make your life safer, easier, and more convenient. We’ll show you that you don’t need to be a computer programmer to take advantage of these new devices.

What is Smart Home Technology?
Smart home technology is simply a device in your home that is connected to the internet and can be controlled remotely. It can be a light bulb you turn on with your phone, a thermostat that you control from your tablet, or a speaker that responds to your voice. The goal of these devices is to automate simple tasks and give you more control over your home.

Smart Lighting: A Bright Idea
Smart lighting is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to make your home safer. It’s especially useful for seniors who want to prevent falls or have a difficult time getting around in the dark.
-
Motion-Activated Lights: You can install small, motion-activated lights in your hallways, bathrooms, and closets. They will turn on automatically when you walk by, so you don’t have to fumble for a light switch.
-
Smart Light Bulbs: These bulbs can be controlled by your phone or a voice assistant. You can turn them on or off from your bed, or even set a schedule for them to turn on at night.

Smart Thermostats: Stay Comfortable and Save Money
Smart thermostats like the Google Nest or ecobee can make your life a lot more comfortable while also saving you money on your heating and cooling bills.
-
Easy Control: You can control the temperature of your home from your smartphone or tablet, so you don’t have to get up to adjust the thermostat.
-
Smart Scheduling: These thermostats can learn your daily schedule and automatically adjust the temperature to save you money when you are away or sleeping.

Voice Assistants: Your New Best Friend
Voice assistants like Google Home and Amazon Alexa are a fantastic tool for seniors. They are easy to use and can help you with a wide variety of tasks.
-
Daily Tasks: You can use a voice assistant to ask for the weather, set a timer, or even create a grocery list.
-
Safety: You can ask a voice assistant to turn on a light for you if you’re in the dark, or even make a phone call to a family member if you need help.
