Good morning, friends!
The holidays are truly here now – can you feel it? There’s something magical about mid-December when the lights twinkle a little brighter, the cookies taste a little sweeter, and Canadians from coast to coast gather to celebrate everything from community concerts to Christmas markets. Whether you’re bundled up against a Maritime snowstorm or enjoying Vancouver’s milder winter, this week brings plenty of ways to connect with your community and make memories.
Your next CPP/OAS/GIS payment arrives Monday, December 22nd – perfect timing for those last-minute holiday needs. We’ve also got important scam alerts (because fraudsters never take a holiday), events happening across every province and territory, and some excellent travel deals if you’re planning to visit family over the holidays.
Let’s dive in!

Senior News Spotlight
Your December 22 Payment is Coming
Mark your calendars: CPP, OAS, and GIS payments will be deposited on Monday, December 22, 2025. If you still receive cheques by mail, allow extra time for delivery during the busy holiday postal period.
Current maximum amounts (October-December 2025):
- CPP maximum: $1,433/month
- OAS (ages 65-74): $727.67/month
- OAS (ages 75+): $800.44/month
- GIS: Varies by income level
Good News for January
OAS benefits will increase by 0.3% for the January-March 2026 quarter, bringing the annual increase to 2.0% over the past year. While it’s not a massive jump, every bit helps keep pace with the rising cost of living.
The quarterly adjustments happen in January, April, July, and October to reflect changes in the Consumer Price Index. It’s the government’s way of making sure your pension keeps up with inflation – even if it doesn’t always feel like enough.
If You Haven’t Set Up Direct Deposit Yet
Now’s the perfect time! Direct deposit means your money arrives safely and on time, no matter what the weather’s doing or how busy Canada Post gets. You can set it up through your My Service Canada Account online, or call 1-800-277-9914.
Scam Alert: Fake “Extra Payment” Websites Targeting Seniors
The CRA has issued an urgent warning about websites spreading false information claiming that low-income seniors are receiving “extra payments” from the Canada Revenue Agency.
Here’s How the Scam Works:
Fraudsters create fake websites with official-looking logos and language describing special benefits for seniors. These sites then direct people to join WhatsApp or Telegram groups where the scammers gather personal information and eventually ask for money or banking details.
Some variations claim you’re eligible for:
- Special “low-income senior” payments
- Unclaimed tax refunds via Interac e-Transfer
- Extra Carbon Rebate payments
- Additional GST/HST credits
Three Things the CRA Will NEVER Do:
- Use WhatsApp or Telegram to discuss your taxes or benefits
- Ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or e-Transfer payments
- Threaten immediate arrest or send police to your door
What To Do If You’re Contacted:
- Don’t click any links in texts or emails claiming to be from CRA
- Don’t respond – even to “unsubscribe”
- Don’t share your Social Insurance Number, banking details, or personal information
- Verify independently by logging into your CRA My Account directly (not through any link)
- Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501
Remember: All legitimate information about government benefits comes from official Canada.ca websites or your provincial/territorial government sites. If it sounds too good to be true and involves WhatsApp groups or urgent action, it’s a scam.
