The Cold War Lands in Ottawa (1946)

History changed forever in 1946 when the Canadian government officially granted asylum to Igor Gouzenko. Just months earlier, Gouzenko, a Soviet cipher clerk, had walked out of the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa with 10 documents hidden under his shirt. These papers exposed a massive Soviet spy ring operating within the Canadian government and even within the Manhattan Project.

Gouzenko’s defection is widely considered the “official” start of the Cold War in the West. He lived out the rest of his life in Canada under an assumed name, famously appearing in television interviews wearing a white hood over his head to protect his identity from Soviet agents.

Aviation History Over Montreal (1909)

Following the historic first flight in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, earlier that year, J.A.D. McCurdy took the Silver Dart to Montreal. On April 3rd, he completed the first successful flight in the province of Quebec, soaring over the frozen St. Louis River. It was a milestone that proved Canadian aviation was the future of the entire country.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Parliament (1980)

Jeanne Sauvé made history on this day when she was appointed as the first female Speaker of the House of Commons. A trailblazer who wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo, she eventually became Canada’s first female Governor General. Her appointment as Speaker was a watershed moment for women in Canadian politics.

1946 Flashback: Life After the War

While the Gouzenko spy scandal was making headlines in Ottawa, Canadians were settling into the first full year of peace after the Second World War.

  • At the Movies: The big winner was The Best Years of Our Lives. It was a poignant film about three veterans returning home to small-town life, a story that hit home for nearly every family in Canada at the time.

  • On the Radio: You couldn’t turn a dial without hearing “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” by Vaughn Monroe. It spent weeks at the top of the charts, providing a cozy soundtrack to a country looking toward a brighter future.
