Good morning! It looks like Old Man Winter isn’t quite finished with us yet, but there’s a distinct feeling of spring just over the horizon. Grab your favorite mug and settle in—here is what’s happening across our great country this week.
Scams to Watch Out For
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is warning of a bold and deeply personal scam that has surfaced recently.
-
The “Bank Courier” Scam: Fraudsters are calling seniors, posing as bank employees, and claiming your credit or debit cards have been “cloned” or compromised. To “help,” they instruct you to cut up your cards and tell you a “bank courier” is coming to your home to pick them up for disposal. Do not fall for this. A bank will never ask you for your PIN, nor will they send a person to your house to collect your cards.
-
Door-to-Door Rebates: Be cautious of individuals appearing at your door offering “government rebates” for energy efficiency. Legitimate provincial or federal rebate programs do not send representatives door-to-door to sign you up on the spot.
-
AI Voice Impersonations: Scammers are now using small clips of voices found on social media to mimic family members in “emergency” calls. If you receive a call from a loved one asking for money in a panic, try to stay calm and use a “family safe word” or call them back on their known number to verify.
