Hi there. Welcome to Canadian Senior Moment.
By now, you have probably heard the question five times: “So, what are your New Year’s Resolutions?” If you are anything like us, you might roll your eyes a little. At our stage of life, the idea of suddenly transforming into a completely new person just because the calendar flipped a page seems a bit ridiculous. We know who we are by now.
The problem with traditional Resolutions is that they are usually based on what we think we should fix. We tell ourselves to lose 10 pounds, read heavy non-fiction books, or finally organize the garage. Essentially, we create a “To-Do List” that we are guaranteed to fail at by February.
This year, I am proposing the “Un-Resolution.”
Instead of adding something new and heavy to your life, what if you decided to remove something heavy? Maybe your resolution is simply to stop watching the news after 6:00 PM because it upsets you. Perhaps it is to release the guilt you feel about saying “no” to invitations you don’t actually want to accept. Or maybe it’s just giving yourself permission to ignore the dust on the top shelf that nobody sees anyway.
January is cold and dark. It is not the time for harsh discipline; it is a time for comfort. So instead of resolving to punish yourself into a “Better You,” resolve to be a little kinder to the “Current You.” Eat the soup. Take the nap. The garage will still be there in April when it’s warm enough to care.
Our Shared Wisdom Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that you actually kept? Or have you given up on them entirely? What is one thing you would like to stop doing this year?
Your turn: Hit reply and share your thoughts! We read every response and often feature reader stories in future articles.
Looking Ahead Tomorrow we wrap up our “Soft Landing” into 2026 by picking a single word to guide us through the year.
Warmly,
Bill and Marilyn,
Founders of Canadian Senior Moment
