Forgotten Dollars Part 12

Provincial Programs and Other Savings

Hi there, Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!

This is the next installment of our new series on overlooked benefits. We’ve covered federal programs and tax credits, and today we’re diving into a very important topic: the valuable benefits and savings available at the provincial and municipal level. From home heating grants to discounted transit, knowing what’s available in your area can make a big difference.

Provincial Care Grants and Health Benefits

Each province and territory has unique programs to help seniors with a wide range of needs, from health care costs to help around the house.

  • Seniors’ Care Grant (Nova Scotia): This is a great example of a program that helps seniors with the costs of living in their own homes longer. It provides an annual grant of up to $750 for low-income seniors to assist with expenses like lawn care, snow removal, grocery delivery, and home repairs.
  • Seniors’ Drug Programs: Most provinces have their own drug benefit programs for seniors that go beyond the federal plan. For example, Prince Edward Island automatically enrols residents when they turn 65, with a small co-payment for prescriptions. In Saskatchewan, eligible seniors pay a flat rate of $25 for most prescriptions.
  • Alberta Coverage for Seniors: In Alberta, seniors receive premium-free coverage for prescription drugs and other services not covered by the regular health care plan. This can include clinical psychological services and chiropractic care.

Free or Discounted Transit

Getting around your community can be a major expense. Many cities and provinces offer discounted or free public transit for seniors to help with the cost.

  • Toronto Transit Commission (TTC): The TTC offers a discounted fare for seniors over 65, which can be loaded onto a PRESTO card.
  • BC Bus Pass Program: British Columbia has a program that offers an annual bus pass to eligible low-income seniors.
  • Go Transit (Ontario): Seniors over 65 who use a PRESTO card get a significant discount of 55% off the regular fare.
  • Halifax Transit (Nova Scotia): In some parts of Halifax, seniors can ride for free on specific days. Check your local transit authority’s website for details.
