Connect and Thrive Online Lesson 3.1

Accessing Online Services – Your Government Gateway

Hi there. Welcome back to “Your Canadian Senior Moment”!

In our last lesson, we learned how to connect with family through video calls. Today, we’re going to use those skills for a more practical purpose: accessing government services online. This can be one of the most powerful reasons to get online, as it can save you time, gas, and a trip to a busy office. It’s a great way to manage your pensions, benefits, and taxes from the comfort of your home.

What is an Online Gateway?

Think of the government’s website as a huge library. The gateway is your personal library card. It’s a secure portal that gives you access to all your personal information and allows you to manage your government benefits.

The main online gateway for Canadians is through My Service Canada Account, which gives you access to all of your federal benefits, including Old Age Security (OAS), the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

How to Set Up Your Account

Setting up an account might seem complicated, but it’s really just a few simple steps. You will need your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an email address.

  1. Go to the Website: Open your web browser and go to the official Government of Canada website. You can type “My Service Canada Account” into your search bar.

  2. Click “Register”: Look for a button that says “Register” or “Sign up.”

  3. Create a Username and Password: You will be asked to create a username and a strong password. Remember our previous lessons and make a strong, memorable password!

  4. Enter Your Information: You will be asked for your personal information, including your Social Insurance Number and your date of birth.

  5. Get a Personal Access Code: This is a very important step. A “Personal Access Code” will be mailed to your home address. This is a security measure to make sure you are who you say you are. Once you receive it (it can take up to 10 days), you can log in to your account for the first time.

Your Turn to Practice!

If you don’t already have one, try setting up your own My Service Canada Account today. It can be a little intimidating, but it’s a great way to take control of your information. Remember, you will have to wait a few days for your Personal Access Code to arrive in the mail.

What’s Next? In our next lesson, we will look at how to get help with your online banking and how to safely shop online. We’ll see you then!

(If you run into any difficulty, please describe any problem in the comments and we’ll do our best to help you individually.)

Warmly,
Bill and Marilyn
