Hi there. Welcome to Canadian Senior Moment.

We’ve talked this week about the holiday crash and ignoring the pressure of resolutions. But as we look down the barrel of a brand new year, we do need something to aim for. We need a reason to get out of bed other than the cat meowing for breakfast.

Instead of a strict goal (like “Walk 5 miles a day”), I like the idea of picking a “North Star” word. This is just a single word or feeling that you want to guide your decisions this year.

For example, maybe your word is “Gentle.” If you have a choice between rushing to an appointment and taking your time, you choose gentle. Or perhaps your word is “Connect.” When you wonder if you should call that old friend you haven’t seen in years, the answer is yes. Or maybe, after a hard 2025, your word is simply “Peace.”

The beauty of a North Star is that you can’t fail at it. You don’t have to track it on a spreadsheet or feel guilty if you miss a day. It’s just a little compass in your pocket that helps you steer the ship.

As we head into the rest of January, I encourage you to find your word. It doesn’t have to be profound to anyone else. It just has to mean something to you. We have a whole year of blank pages ahead of us. Let’s not rush to scribble on them all at once. Let’s take our time, enjoy the quiet, and write a story we actually want to read.

Our Shared Wisdom If you had to pick one word to describe what you want more of in 2026, what would it be? Is it Peace? Adventure? Health? Family?

Your turn: Hit reply and share your thoughts! We read every response and often feature reader stories in future articles.

Looking Ahead We hope you have a wonderful weekend. Next week we will be back to our regular schedule. Until then, stay warm and drive safe.

Warmly,
Bill and Marilyn,
